Rio Vista Acupuncture: OVERACTIVE BLADDER

Approximately 17 percent of American men and women suffer from overactive bladder and spend an estimated $20 billion on products to manage the condition. But research published in Obstetrics & Gynecology indicates that acupuncture is a more effective treatment.

Incontinence and urinary tract disorders commonly arise as one gets older, especially for women over fifty. Normal bladder functions are regulated by the bladder, brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. With overactive bladder the bladder continually sends a signal to the brain that the bladder should be emptied.

Fortunately, electro-stimulation acupuncture can address bladder issues and reduce the symptoms of incontinence. A study with electro-stimulation acupuncture for overactive bladder treated seventy-four women and men for 12 weekly sessions. The research concluded that women and men who received weekly bladder-specific acupuncture treatments significantly improved in bladder capacity, urinary urgency, frequency, and quality of life.

With electro-stimulation acupuncture, very specific acupuncture points are used. These points stimulate nerves that travel directly to the bladder and help the body regain control.

Patients report long-lasting relief of their symptoms, less trips to the bathroom, less urgency, and fewer accidents. Office visits are once a week for 30 to 45 minutes for 12 weeks. This is usually followed by periodic maintenance sessions.
