Virtual America’s Boating Course

The course covers information of interest to new boaters and boaters who just want to refresh their boating knowledge. Successful completion of this NASBLA approved course meets the requirements for the California Boater’s Card and will also qualify for insurance discounts with most carriers.
Subjects covered include basic terminology and types of boats, environmental considerations, use of a marine radio, trailering, anchoring, knots, weather considerations, basic operations, federal and state regulations, and rules of the road. ($35 fee)

Partner In Command

This is a one-day training course designed for spouses, partners, older children, and friends of the boat owner and concentrates on teaching the individual how to handle the boat in the event the owner becomes unable to command the vessel. The program is similar to Jump Start however, it assumes that the skipper will perform any follow-up training with the student. This training is performed at the SJDPS Training Facility Island located on the Delta and includes a light dinner following the training. Participants are welcome to come out to the island on Friday and may stay over Saturday evening if they desire. ($60 fee)

Jump Start Program

The Jump Start Program is designed for the new boater or a boater who has moved to a different type of vessel and feels the need for one-on-one instruction to help him become comfortable with his new boat.
Training includes a review of a current Vessel Safety Check, environmental considerations, discussion of information given in the ABC Course, and hands-on, on-the-water instruction of the particular vessel. This training can be tailored to the specific desires of the boat owner. The program is provided free of charge, however, the following criteria must be met: the instructor must be invited by the boat owner, the boat must have current insurance and Vessel Safety Check, life jackets must be worn at all times, the weather must be suitable, and the instructor must be competent on the particular type vessel.
