Let’s Go Fishing - September 28, 2016

DELTA
Find a section of water void of water hyacinth and water grasses and you will likely catch a few striped bass to a whopping 4 or 5 pounds. That seems to be the scenario these days out on the Delta waterways. Trolling, drifting live minnows or blue gills and at anchor tossing fresh threadfin shad is the ticket to having a bit of success these days. Expect a number of undersized fish before hooking a legal 18 incher or better. Field scouts report most of the larger striped bass seem to be holding in the Suisun Cut where they are using split tails and shad for bass up to 17 pounds. The bite isn’t fast, but if you have some patience it might very well pay off. Striped bass are making an appearance throughout the Delta all the way up to the San Joaquin River at the Highway 4 bridge.

The salmon bite has improved for shoreline anglers, especially at Dillon Point at Benicia. In the early mornings the parking lot is full by 6:30 a.m. with fishermann coming as far as San Jose and Sacramento in order to throw Mepp’s Flying C’s and Vee-Zee spinners. The salmon are big and bright with several weighing 30 pounds.

Steffen Masters with Lost Anchor Bait at McAvoy’s Boat Harbor stated that the sturgeon fishing has picked up outside the harbor with grass shrimp providing the best action. Grass shrimp is now available and the quality is very good.

Salmon fishing on the Old Sacramento River is picking up with some quality fish showing from Light 36 north of the Rio Vista Bridge up into the Walnut Grove area. The best lure continues to be the Silvertron spinner in the green color pattern with single or double blades. Most are trolling the spinner at 1 1/2 mph with a 2 ounce drop sinker to get as close as possible to the river bottom in 15 feet of water. Most of the recent salmon caught are ranging from 12 to 20 pounds, up to an occasional fish weighing 26 pounds. Salmon continue to be taken off the shoreline at the Freeport Bridge, especially with the Mepp’s flying C Spinner or jigging with the P-Line Laser or Slammer Minnows.
For small mouth bass try along the rocks in Steamboat Slough or Miner Slough with deep diving crank baits, live minnows, plastics or the drop-shot to 1 1/2 pounds average, up to an occasional 3 pounder.

OCEAN
The salmon and rock fishing continue to provide limits and near limits for private and party boats clients outside the Golden Gate, Monterey Bay, Half Moon Bay and Bodega Bay. But choosing the right day is critical! On one day the bite is decent the next day it could be great. The salmon are holding in 50 to 120 feet of water with some showing 140 to 250 ft. depths offshore. Some of the better salmon action is taking place off the San Mateo shoreline with salmon running from 8 to 15 pounds on the average with a few running to 25 pounds. Note: The Dungeness crab pot pulling season opens on Saturday, November 5, 2016.

TAKE TIME TO GO OUT AND ENJOY THE GREAT OUTDOORS. BE SURE TO CHECK WEATHER CONDITIONS BEFORE HEADING OUT INTO THE BIG WATERS. STAY SAFE TO FISH ANOTHER DAY. UNTIL NEXT TIDE
