Springtime in the Delta

May 2010

Hello Scuttlebutt readers.  The Delta weather has been wonderful over the last several days, with the exception of yesterday when we had a few sprinkles.  Looks like sunshine now so come out and enjoy this wonderful Delta!

We attended a fun filled mixer at Windmill Cove on May 12. About 100 people attended and music was provided by David & Barbara Torres. Chef Pierre created platters of great food and the Bass Ale and Margaruitas flowed freely. Jeff Tucker joined as a booster member and the San Joaquin Yacht Harbor joined as a business member.

Come out and join us at the next mixer on June 9, 2010, from 6:00PM to 7:30PM at the Horny Toad Bar & Restaurant, 10438 E. Waterloo Road, Stockton, Ca, Phone: 209-931-2627.

The Driftwood Yacht Club held the Opening Day on April 3 with a parade along the Antioch waterfront. The San Joaquin Yacht Club held their Opening Day parade on April 17 going around Bethel Island and starting and ending at the club. The Pacific Interclub Yacht Association held their opening day on the bay on Sunday April 25. There were about 100 boats from numerous area yacht clubs. The same weekend was the Aspargus festival in Stockton with plenty of waterfront activity including a boat parade featuring a Bonnie & Clyde theme sponsored by the Stockton Yacht Club.

Village West Yacht Club had its "Camping on the Green" event this past weekend. A great evening with live music, smores, and members with their RV's, tents, or boats at the docks.... "We now know that our automatic lawn spinklers do indeed come on at 2 am!"

A lot is going on with the Department of Water Resources plan to divert the Sacramento River around the Delta:

The Assembly Water, Parks & Wildlife Committee discussed Assemblyperson Alyson Hubers AB 1594 that would require a full vote of the legislature before any peripheral conveyance was built. Unfortunately the bill did not get out of committee. Here is a link to the committee meeting, AB 1594 begins at about minute 40:  https://www.calchannel.com/channel/viewVideo/1306

Here is a link to a discussion of the Two Gates project that will land lock the Discovery Bay area. It is about three hours long and very interesting. If you can't watch the whole thing at least watch the public comments which are about the last ten minutes:  https://www.calchannel.com/channel/viewvideo/1361

There are plenty of fun things going on in the Delta this is the season to party!
Looking for something to do this weekend??  The Delta Loop Fest will be on Saturday, May 22 on Andrus Island. Many resorts and businesses along Brannan Island Road will have special events and and fun activities. The Lighthouse will have a 99 cent breakfast, $2.00 beer, and live music, Perry's will have the Classic Yacht Association showing antique and classic boats. Happy Harbor is having a bikini contest and a chest hair contest. B & W Resort is having a drawing for a two night vacation cabin. Delta Shores Resort is having a Jeep and Rv show along with food, and an arts & crafts show. Moore's Riverboat is having $2.00 hot dogs, $2.00 beer and live music. Delta Yacht Sales has an "open boat weekend". Korth's Pirates Lair Gift shop has a drawing for a Marty Stanley print. The restaurant is open and is having drawings for gift certificates. Spindrift has a pajama party breakfast in the morning, the general store is having drawings for gift certificates, Brannan Island KOA has a drawing for a two night stay. Rivers Edge Marina will have a Fishing Derby from 9:00AM to 4:00PM. Bruno's Island is holding a flea market sale from 10:00AM to 3:00PM. Owl Harbor is having dinghy races at 2:00PM along with food and live music. Discover the Delta has free T-shirts, coloring books, and popcorn. ISAGENIX will have taste testing and diet & nutrition information. Also, there will be a Loop Fest drawing for a $3,000 grand prize - tickets, $50.00 each, only 200 will be sold!

We are moving forward on the Discovery Center and Farm Stand:

  • The property at the corner of Highway 160 and Highway 12 has been cleared of approximately 1000 trees to make room for the new building.
  • Work is progressing on the Farm Stand to get a final on the bulilding so it can be opened in July.
  • The Discovery Center Building is due to be delivered within the next couple of weeks.
  • A source for fill has been found and it will be placed and compacted at the site.
  • The Dutra Group will be bringing rock base up by barge to be placed over the compacted fill.
  • The Tower is scheduled to be cut into sections to enable it to be placed on a barge to cross the river.  Then the sections will be trucked to the site to be re-assembled and set in place.
