When weather conditions permit, the only thing going on out on the Delta waterways is the excellent sturgeon fishing on the Sacramento River and further downstream into the Suisun and Grizzly Bay area.

Due to exceptional high tides and water releases out of Folsom Reservoir exceeding 35,000 cubic feet per second into the American River creating tough fishing conditions out on the Delta waterways, especially on the Sacramento River where conditions are not very good.

The calm weather conditions provide excellent opportunities to fish for either striped bass, sturgeon or salmon. Presently, there are good numbers of striped bass averaging 21 to 23 inches in length along with many undersized fish throughout the system.

We continue to have some of the best fall weather for striper fishing that anyone could ask for with day time temperatures reaching into the mid 70’s or better here at the Antioch Bridge with very little wind.

Salmon continue to trickle into the Sacramento River, and the recent trend of larger fish along the Marin coastline is contributing to a larger grade of fish traveling into the system.

Good numbers of striped bass are now plying the waters on both the San Joaquin and the Sacramento Rivers where boaters at anchor are scoring on most of the fish tossing threadfin shad for bass averaging 18 inches, up to an occasional fish weighing 5 to 7 pounds.

Well, the 69th Annual Bass Derby is now history and congrats go out to the lucky winners, Andy Douens of Oakley who caught a 291” striped bass, the exact target length , to claim the $1000 first prize followed by Michael Allen of Antioch who hooked a 47.96” sturgeon to claim a prize of $500 and Donald Jefferies of Colfax who claimed $500 for the largest salmon at 23 1/4 pounds.

Striped bass throughout the system, but most are less than the 18 inch minimum size requirement. Field scouts report on any given day they will catch anywhere from 15 to 20 fish and maybe 5 or 6 might be legal size up to a big fish weighing 4 or 5 pounds.
